now how about some reviews!
Belladonna Bouquet – THE SCARLET CEREMONIES: So, we’re back to music from thee bedrooms/livingrooms of America (& that’s a GOOD thing, since music belongs to the people, anyway)! 4-track progressed to CD, this female duo (Jenne & Sarada) takes you on a (sorta’) homespun journey through their dreams with story vox against handclaps, electric guitars & various wind instruments. I particularly liked “Broken Skies”, with it’s flavor of majestic doom, tho’ it’s a bit too short. This label (Orange Entropy Records) is in New Jersey, kinda’ makes me wonder if Don Campau hasn’t been out there stirring the pot for home-production of homemade CD’s. For a home production, THE SCARLET CEREMONIES is very interesting. Very interesting balance between vocals that come off almost like folk and ambient space tunes. belladonna bouquet: Three Pagan women use an unusual assortment of instruments, voices and home recording weave psychedelic and mythological tunes of a dark folk flavor. Based in New Jersey, Belladonna Bouquet has one CD currently (and cheaply!) available from Orange Entropy Records (see the site for a link to theirs) with one planned for this summer. WitchVox
Belladonna Bouquet - The Scarlet Ceremonies As the crisp air and muted colors of fall overtake the final thrusts of summer’s closeness and heat, the strains of Belladonna Bouquet can be heard ushering in a grim beauty celebrated by costumed kids and black-clothed goths alike. Twin songstresses/multi- instrumentalists JENNE and SARADA are no doubt informed by goth culture, but most of their work far exceeds that genre’s (mostly) limited expectations. The pair channel a diverse array of styles, summoning tones from the beyond, and issuing forth a folksy psychedelia and experimental grand guignol thats equal parts spectral-mood-mavens Mauve Sideshow/Torn Curtain, wyrd-folk practitioners STONE BREATH ( a band of which Sarada is a member), San-Fran acid-heads 50 Foot Hose, and electro-acoustic soundscapists Melodic Energy Commision. Their voices are as simultaneously angelic and threatening as the sounds they coax their instruments to emit. To know this record is to know beauty, anguish and transcendence.—-Greg Weeks
