If You Could Ask One Question
This is a list of bands that are named after foods. As we were putting this list together, we tried to have an intuitive grasp of what is and what isn't a band named after a food. Bands like The Strawberry Alarm Clock were obviously to be included. We allowed names that are misspellings of foods. Initially, we allowed proper names; Jello Biafra and Peaches and Herb would be included. But as the list expanded, the consequences of having too broad a definition became aesthetically unpleasing. Should Roger Waters, Muddy Waters, Herb Alpert and Art Pepper really be included? No, they shouldn't, that is a cheap petty list that violates our aesthetics. And the more we thought about it, the more it became obvious that proper names violated the spirit of the list; the point behind the list is about artists deciding to name themselves after foods. Thus, Jello Biafra makes the list but Art Pepper does not. Food nicknames and pseudonyms that are the professional name of a performer count but given names and private nicknames do not (Bunny Berigan makes it but Charlie "Bird" Parker does not.) Also, some animals are eaten as food, but it seemed proper and aesthetically pleasing to include them on a separate list. To wit, many bands are named after canines; some people eat dogs, so do bands-named-after-dogs make the list? No, we are on a slippery slope once we do that. Many animals are rarely eaten but humans might sometimes eat them; are they to be considered as foods? No, the list becomes messy and inelegant. It is better to make a separate a list of bands named after animals, a list that includes all animals. And the same distinctions that we have made for music acts with food names also apply here. Editors note: the more we investigated, the more we learned that these lists cannot even come close to being complete. Every time we turned around there were more bands with food or animal names staring at us, brand new bands with debut albums, most of them bound to fail and be forever forgotten, but still they should be noted in the annals of bands named after either foods or animals. The main contributors to these lists were Bill Paquin, Mike Nigro, and Duf Davis. All three are members of the "crack" staff at the Princeton Record Exchange, one of the few institutions that could provide a forum for this nonsense.
