now how about some reviews! GODBOY "SMELL THE FURY" 14 SONG CASSETTE This is the oddest sounding collection of songs I have ever heard. But I like them. Godboy isn't god-like at all, however, they are very boyish in a quizzical sort of way. You don't believe me? Just check out their song titles. I knew I was in trouble as soon as I read them. But, I've got to tell you, this quartet has a fetching fantasy aura about them that makes them worth checking out; at which time you'll either love them or hate them. I happen to like them, but then would did you expect from a guy who did too much orange sunshine in the seventies.
Instant - Sept/Oct 1997 - Kerry Scott Ladies and gentlemen, Frank Zappa! But seriously, Godboy seems to indulge in all the things that helped make Zappa so legendary. Odd arrangements, strange subjects, interesting use of instrumentation, and very, very odd song titles; they can cram 14 songs into what is essentially a demo tape. Though the tape tends to wander at times, there are enough highlights and strongpoints to bring you right back in. Songs like "Check Out My Lava Lamp", the lead track, and "$5 In a Dead Punk's Fist", clocking in at a whopping 1:29, are a couple of the standouts. Godboy has definitely begun to create a bit of a niche in the Boston market. There are not too many bands doing this locally. This tape should go a long way in helping Godboy get some well deserved recognition. -Kerry Scott

Beantown's answer to Beck, maybe, with a little Syd stuck in for seasoning. "Jerry's Dead" packs a wallop, with it's circular tumbril percussion and swirling guitar line. "Sharks at My Feet" is a radio-ready sensation du jour with a slightly punchier production ethos. Sharp lyrics and an eagerness to vary the mix make this a keeper from the get-go. 'Course, with a song title like "$5 In a Dead Punk's Fist" or (my favorite of ALL TIMES) "Helmet of Fucking Doom," you probably can't go wrong by giving this at least a perfunctory listen in any case. I guess if you wanted to carp, you'd have to say that truly outstanding tunes are kind of scarce. With 2 great ones out of 14, Godboy's batting a measly .143 by my count. But on the bright side, the band has none of the seriousness of even a child intently at play - but this lack of gravitas is reflected in their scatter-shot approach to sequencing, which seems to consist of the mantra "Throw it against the wall and see if it sticks." The song "Sharks at My Feet" is best, mostly because of its compositional inventiveness, reminiscent betimes of Ubu's latter-day experiments with ambient sound. "Anti-Midget" has an early Green Magnet School feel to it; "Skull to Grind" is a lovely snippet of corrugated angst; "Love on the Rocks" sounds like an out-take from the same Rolling Stones session that gave us "Faraway Eyes." "Boy In Dog In Shark In Boy" is a clever conceit; not since "Pink Cookies in a Plastic Bag Getting Crushed By a Building" have we heard a better. If only they had stopped a little more than halfway through, with the aptly titled "Best Song on the Mix," with it's deceptively simple premise and arrangement, we'd be talking A Solid Job. As is, their need to include seemingly everything they've ever done, good, bad, or indifferent, does not show the best artistic judgment. There are worse fates than having more ideas than you know how to properly develop - Abbey Road sold more copies than any other Beatles disc - and so I have no choice but to say "Well done (for the most part) my good and faithful servants!" I agree. This is my pick for tape of the month. HHHH 1/2 Smell the Fury was also chosen as #16 in the Noise' top 20 tapes of 1997(Feb. 1998 issue).
