Plastic Ash

Plastic Ash was started in late 1995 by Steve Murtaugh (guitar/vocals) and Chris Cortese(bass/vocals). Chris and Steve had played together in Portable Nietzsche with Tony Volpone (Kathead) and in Delirium Tremors with drum phenom Brendan Concannon before going their separate ways. Chris was playing in Kathead and Steve in Corrupt Justin when he received a call from Mike Powers (Swizzle Pigs) answering their year old ad for a guitarist. Steve and Chris got back together with Darren (drummer for Kathead) and Mike and called up old pal Derek Haines to play keys. Practice began in a storage space in Newark, DE near the University where this really cool friend of Derek's lived named T.J. He would charge bands $20 a night to practice in his storage space that had a P.A. and a parachute and you could keep your shit there while he watched T.V. and occasionally jumped in on vocals during particularly dead rehearsals. Look for some of these outtakes on future Orange Entropy releases or this page. In the meantime, check out their tracks on OE compilations Gala Masala and OE008. The Ash never could find a steady drummer, playing live with Ben a number of times, J.J. (now with Divine Rapture) a few times, Doc (Corrupt Justin and Pottstown, PA Death Metal legends Witchery), and this really cool cat from Philly named Billy, who was the drummer at the band's final performance, the very drunken evening of November 12,1998, closing the show for Elevenland 's CD release party at John and Peter's. The band's drinking habits earned them the Ben-coined nickname "Plastered Ash" and eventually led to the current hiatus - well, that and the fact that no drummers would stick around.
